I remember when cold foam was first beginning to be a thing. It was pretty interesting. A different approach to the standard iced coffee with milk. The cold foam is not as sweet and allows the flavor of the coffee to come through.
And then there are so many kinds of cold foam! Chocolate cold foam. Sea salt cold foam. Caramel cold foam. Or just the basic cold foam. What is this stuff anyways? Pardon my ignorance, but at the time I thought that someone had the job of frothing milk on the espresso bar, scooping it out and then storing it in the refrigerator. Yep. Not very smart.

ToggleWhat is Cold Foam?
So what is cold foam? Is it easy to make? The short answer is yes! Just froth some milk on your espresso machine and then… just kidding. Cold foam is really just heavy cream that is beaten for a few minutes. Add a couple ingredients and you can make all kinds of cold foam. Once complete, it becomes the perfect creamy finish to a cold brew coffee. Honestly, at first I was not a big fan of dressing up my cold brews. I’m a pretty simple guy. I like my cold brew like I like my whiskey – straight up over ice. But every so often, it’s nice to indulge a bit and cold foam is a simple way to upgrade your cold brew. There is something about chocolate that pairs so well with a cold brew.
In a previous post, we showed you how to make an easy cold brew right from home. This is an absolute staple in my fridge during the summer. It’s easy to make, and I love having the option to pour myself a cold coffee at any time of the day. Adding some chocolate cold foam to your drink mixes it up a bit and gives your taste buds a bit of an adventure as well!
A Note on the Sweetener
This recipe takes 3 simple ingredients – heavy cream, cocoa powder and a sweetener. And you can adjust how sweet you want your drink to taste. We like to use maple syrup in our cold foam, just enough for a slight sweet flavor. Feel free to swap out for the sweetener of your choice and have fun with it!
Chocolate Cold Foam
Equipment
- 1 Hand Mixer
or a Milk Frother - 1 Mixing Bowl
Ingredients
- 1 cup Heavy Cream
- 4 tbsp Sweetener of choice We use maple syrup
- 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
Instructions
- Put the heavy cream, sweetener and the baking cocoa in a mixing bowl
- Using a milk frother or hand mixer, beat the mixture until the cream begins to thicken. The more you beat the mixture, the more it will become like whipped cream. For cold foam, you want it to become slightly thick, but watery enough to pour on top of your coffee.
- Pour on top of your favorite cold brew and enjoy!
Storing your Chocolate Cold Foam
Can’t go wrong with a mason jar to do the trick here! Just pour what you have in the jar and store in your refrigerator (right next to the cold brew).
Pro Tip: When the chocolate cold foam sits in the refrigerator, it will separate. You can shake the jar and the mixture will become runny enough for you to pour into your cold brew.
Closing Thoughts
Adding chocolate cold foam is such a simple way to add some flare to your cold brew this summer! Try it out and enjoy this refreshing beverage at home or on the road!
